FAQ's

How do I power a 220V ZGYRO with my 120V generator?

The solution for powering a 240V ZGYRO system on a boat with a 120V Generator is simple, safe, and widely utilized.

By using your generator’s two 120V legs through a dedicated double-pole breaker, you are following the gold standard for marine electrical installation. This ensures your ZGYRO has the robust, safe power it needs to keep your vessel stable.

Any AC qualified marine electrician should be well versed and experienced in this standard configuration. (Virtually all heavy-duty equipment onboard boats, including all gyro stabilizer brands, utilize 240V power to ensure maximum electrical efficiency with a significantly lower amperage draw)

It’s a low cost, safe and common wiring configuration.

What is ZGYRO, and how established is the company?

ZGYRO manufactures marine gyro stabilizers for recreational, commercial and large-vessel applications.

While relatively new here, launching US based operations Feb 2026 at the Miami Beach Boat Show,  ZGYRO has more than 12 years of experience and over 950 installations worldwide.

ZGYRO USA provides local sales, commissioning, technical and warranty support.

How does ZGYRO compare with Seakeeper?

Both systems use gyroscopic technology to reduce vessel roll, but ZGYRO takes a different engineering approach.

Key ZGYRO advantages include:

  • Electric rather than hydraulic precession control

  • No hydraulic precession, hoses, valves or fluid

  • Regenerative power technology

  • Straightforward, low-cost maintenance

  • 4-year / 2,000-hour warranty

  • Competitive purchase and ownership costs

  • U.S.-based technical and warranty support

How does ZGYRO's electric precession differ from Seakeeper's hydraulic precession?

ZGYRO controls precession electrically rather than hydraulically.

This eliminates the hydraulic pumps, hoses and fluid associated with hydraulic precession, resulting in fewer components, fewer potential failure points and reduced maintenance requirements.

What level of roll reduction should I expect?

A correctly sized ZGYRO targets approximately 90–95% roll reduction.

Actual performance varies depending on the vessel, loading, hull characteristics, sea conditions and the size of the ZGYRO installed.

Does ZGYRO work at zero speed and underway?

Yes. ZGYRO provides stabilization at zero speed and underway, including while anchored, drifting, trolling or cruising.

As vessel speed increases, the hull naturally becomes more stable. The gyro continues operating, but its contribution becomes less noticeable as the vessel's inherent stability increases.

How does ZGYRO pricing compare with an equivalently sized Seakeeper?

ZGYRO is generally substantially more competitively priced than an equivalently sized Seakeeper, with particularly significant differences on some larger systems.

The best comparison considers the complete ownership package: equipment price, installation, warranty, scheduled maintenance and ongoing ownership costs.

What maintenance does ZGYRO require, and what does it cost?

ZGYRO is designed for straightforward, low-cost scheduled maintenance.

Typical maintenance includes:

  • Anodes: approximately every 6 months; typically around $10 each

  • Cooling/lubrication service: approximately every 2 years; service components around $500, excluding labor and travel

Because ZGYRO uses electric precession, there is no hydraulic precession system, hydraulic fluid, pumps, hoses or associated hydraulic servicing.

What is the ZGYRO warranty?

ZGYRO provides a 4-year / 2,000-hour warranty as standard, subject to the applicable warranty terms and required maintenance.

This provides strong long-term protection and reflects ZGYRO's confidence in the reliability of its systems.

What happens if vessel power is lost?

ZGYRO's regenerative power technology allows the system to use energy available in the spinning flywheel if external vessel power is lost.

This energy powers critical control and cooling functions during spool-down and, while sufficient flywheel energy remains, allows the system to continue providing stabilization.

Importantly, the system can self-power its cooling during spool-down, protecting the high-speed bearings without relying on the vessel operator to maintain external power while the flywheel slows.

Which ZGYRO models are available in DC?

Currently, Z0.5 through Z2.5 are available in DC configurations.

The required voltage depends on the specific model, so this should always be confirmed when the system is selected.

Where can a ZGYRO be installed, and does it need to be on the centerline?

ZGYRO can generally be installed anywhere from just forward of midships to the transom.

It does not necessarily need to be installed on the vessel's centerline, provided the vessel's static list is taken into consideration.

Can I reuse my existing gyro foundation, power supply and cooling system?

In many cases, yes.

The existing foundation, power supply and cooling system are often completely suitable, with the addition of a ZGYRO adapter plate.

Can multiple smaller ZGYROs be installed instead of one larger unit?

Yes. Multiple ZGYROs can be installed where space, access or vessel layout makes one larger unit difficult to accommodate.

What information do you need from me to determine the correct ZGYRO and installation?

For an initial assessment, we generally need:

  • Vessel make, model and year

  • Fully loaded displacement

  • Photos and dimensions of the proposed installation area

  • Photos and dimensions of the access route

  • Electrical-system information

If replacing an existing gyro, also provide the gyro make/model.
